The origin of WGBH’s High School Quiz show was as a regional northeast television show that pits area high school students against each other in an intellectual quiz show. The online version of this game was created to give the show a national introduction before its roll out in other states and to generate brand buzz.

WGBH’s online High School Quiz Show is a dynamic and powerful example of a great use of digital interactive in its creation of a multi-player game that ties in the action and competition of a live game show while also pulling in the aspects of social media to create buzz. The challenge of taking the fast paced live action of the television show and translating that to the web was an exciting prospect for us.

The difference in this game versus any other online quiz game is that few are live multi-player games that create “bot” competition along with live players from multiple sources (WGBH, Facebook) to create a live, active competition in the moment. Our application uses “intelligent matchmaking” to create balanced competitions enabling the number of contestants in each competition to stay relatively uniform as players drop in and out. If there aren’t enough players “bots” are employed to simulate human opponents.

Utilizing the social components of Facebook to leverage the television show brought the brand to a national level engaging users and building awareness and interest in a show that would only be seen or noticed regionally. The fact that players came from 8 different countries and from all different regions of the US was a welcome accomplishment for us.
